Myong-Hee Ki: Reading the Time With My Hands

Bremen studio grant 2021
Myong-Hee Ki: Reading the Time With My Hands

In her “woven drawings”, Myong-Hee Ki translates textile structures and attempts to immerse herself in them during this process. Her works convey a slowness and tranquillity, capturing the essence of the everyday objects that surround us and their poetic dimension. More woven than drawn, they reveal traces of a linear hand and a concentrated gaze.
In the exhibition Reading the Time With My Hands, Ki uses various forms of presentation to reflect on her working methods and the associated cyclical time sequences: supposedly completed works are deposited, taken out again and modified so that something new is created in turn. Individual pictorial elements combine to form a whole that is set in motion by folds and bends. The essence of the structure, which is formed and animated by repetition and the difference that always arises from it, comes to the fore here.

We are delighted to present this year’s annual editions by artists who have exhibited or worked at the Künstlerhaus in 2021.
This year, as a prelude to the 30th anniversary of the Künstlerhaus, which we will celebrate in 2022, we are also presenting a selection of editions and unique works from the years since 2005. The presentation in the gallery is created in collaboration with students of Radek Krolczyk’s professionalization seminar at the HfK Bremen.
Many thanks to all the participating artists and the HfK students involved for their support!
