Artists in Residence Ukraine

Residency for Ukrainian artists

The “Artists in Residence Ukraine” grant is aimed at visual artists from Ukraine who are affected by the Russia-Ukraine war. In 2022, the Goethe-Institut supported the residency, and since 2023 the Senator for Culture. These can be refugee artists in the European diaspora as well as artists who are still in Ukraine but are restricted in their working methods and/or are looking for networking with an external artistic community.

The residency comprises a two-month working stay for one artist in the guest studio of the Künstler:innenhaus Bremen, a cash grant including materials and a travel allowance. Within the framework of the residency, an artist discussion is to take place in order to enable an exchange with visual artists and curators from the Bremen scene. In addition, a studio visit or work discussion should be planned at the end of the stay with the artists and the curator of the house in the host studio.

The goal here is a mutual exchange on the content, working conditions, and experiences in their respective practices. During the residency, the artist in residence will be assigned a contact person from among the artistic community. The residency is family-friendly: parents can take up the residency with their children (childcare not included).

Award procedure

It is not possible to apply directly for the residency. A jury of Artists at Risk will review all applications received and propose suitable artists for the residency at the Künstler:innehaus Bremen. The final selection lies with Künstler:innenhaus Bremen.
