Info
Since its founding in 1992, the Künstler:innenhaus Bremen e. V. (KH Bremen) has established itself as a vibrant center for the production, presentation and advancement of art and culture. The non-profit association brings together seventeen studios for visual artists, a gallery, a guest studio, a printing and wood workshop, studios and offices for the creative community, the artists’ associations BBK and GEDOK as well as a restaurant—all under one roof. In addition to regular contemporary art exhibitions, the public is also invited to occasional open studio events. The association’s members have access to a team with a wide range of cultural expertise, which promotes exchange and cooperation between various disciplines.
The KH Bremen is just a stone’s throw from the Weserburg Museum and the art association GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst on the Teerhof, making it an important central location for artistic production on the south bank of the Weser in Neustadt. The artist associations located in the front building organize on behalf of a large part of Bremen’s artist community. While the BBK focuses on professional issues faced by artists and organizes exhibitions for its members, GEDOK promotes the work of female artists and also organizes exhibitions. The Bremer Kunst Satellit—a program that sends selected artists to exhibitions all over the world—also operates out of the KH Bremen.

Studios
The studios at Künstler:innenhaus Bremen provide the basic framework for artists’ work. They are publicly advertised across various disciplines (painting, film, photography, installation, sculpture, performance, etc.) and are awarded for five years by a jury of experts. This gives Bremen artists the opportunity to establish themselves in a professional environment in Bremen, especially in the years following their graduation. You can find out more about the artists’ diverse and cross-regional activities on this page.
At Künstler:innenhaus Bremen, all members have the opportunity to present their work to the general public at in-house events such as house visits and open studio days. If you are interested in a studio space, you can sign up for our newsletter here at any time—we will inform you well in advance about the next vacancies.

Gallery (exhibition space)
The gallery at Künstler:innenhaus shows an international program of contemporary art that is open to the public and free of charge. In the 1990s, the exhibition program showcased artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Mike Nelson, Anya Gallacio and Roman Signer. Later, important figures from the field of experimental film such as Kenneth Anger and Hans Richter were exhibited at the Künstlerhaus, as well as Emily Jacir, Simon Dybbroe Møller and Ahmet Ögut. In recent years, projects by Sidsel Meineche Hansen, Marie Angeletti, Lina Hermsdorf, Jimmy Robert and Jef Geys, among others, have been presented in solo exhibitions.
Every year, three to five temporary exhibitions are shown, each of which is made accessible in more depth through a wide-ranging public program and regular guided tours. The year concludes with a presentation of the Bremen studio scholarship together with the annual editions. The exhibitions and the gallery’s program of events are curated by the gallery’s director, who changes regularly. This has enabled the Künstler:innenhaus to raise its international profile through changing curatorial approaches and establishing diverse networks. The focus of the current curator and artistic director, Nadja Quante, is on feminist and queer positions, social issues and interdisciplinary approaches.

Funding programs for Bremen artists
The Künstler:innenhaus Bremen is also involved in supporting artists in the region: it provides a studio for the twelve-month Bremen studio scholarship from the Senator for Culture and enables scholarship holders to exchange ideas with experienced colleagues. Since 2017, it has been organizing meetings between international curators from abroad and Bremen artists as part of the annual Visiting Curators program (in cooperation with the Bremen Artists’ Association (BBK), the Bremen Women Artists’ Association GEDOK, the Städtische Galerie Bremen and the University of the Arts Bremen). In addition to its own guest residency and an exchange scholarship with Künstlerhaus Dortmund (since 2024), Künstler:innenhaus Bremen has been offering an annual **three-month residency in Helsinki in cooperation with its partner institution HIAP (Helsinki International Artist Program) since 2019, which is open to artists from Bremen. Since 2022, Künstler:innenhaus has been organizing an annual two-month residency for artists from Ukraine in cooperation with Artists at Risk.

Partnerships
The Künstler:innenhaus Bremen forms a triangle with the Museum Weserburg and the art association GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, all on the banks of the Kleine Weser. KH Bremen regularly participates in events organized jointly with other partners in Bremen, such as the Long Night of Bremen Museums or the Neustadt Open Studios. Through its involvement in committees such as the AG Künstler:innenförderung und Stadtkultur and numerous juries in the city of Bremen and beyond, the KH Bremen plays a key role in promoting artists and the cultural profile of the city of Bremen. Through partnerships with art and cultural institutions as well as universities and art colleges, it is well connected locally, regionally and internationally.
Previous cooperations include: Bremen University of the Arts, University of Bremen, Berlin University of the Arts, GAK Bremen, Kunsthalle Kunstmuseum Bremerhaven, Temporary Gallery, Cologne, Triangle Marseille, Flat Time House, London, PAKT Amsterdam, Assemble, Berlin.
