Exhibition and accompanying program

Thirty-two artists from six countries are showing their work in the exhibition Tourist City - Die Neuerfindung des Ortes in Bremen in June. The artists address the longings and fears of visitors and residents and examine tourist perspectives and the conditions under which tourism takes place. They open up visionary spaces of thought in which new forms of tourism can be established.

Contemporary art can be seen and experienced at four very striking exhibition venues and in the urban space. Among other works, Hyperghetto by Oliver Augst and Christoph Korn can be seen at Künstlerhaus Bremen. The extent of violence in the world’s urban centers is addressed here in a striking way. Tourism needs security and so in many cities, scenes of violence and tourism are located close to each other, but strictly separated.

On the other side of the Weser, you can visit Patricia Lambertus at the Handwerkerhof in Böttcherstraße, who is working on a guided tour of Bremen that combines well-known places with new stories and images.

In Speicher XI, the revival of the old port areas can be experienced at first hand and here too, in the Bremen Center for Building Culture, you can explore visions of the Tourist City.

The Schlachthof is the starting point and venue for the diverse accompanying program. The tours to the other exhibition venues start here every Sunday. Combined city and art tours provide information about Tourist City and Bremen. Artistic activities, films and lectures address the visions and problems of tourism. Enjoy Bremen from an inflatable boat and float through virtual cityscapes - this is an offer from Dutch artist Hermen Maat, who moors his Float Scanner at the Schlachte.

To kick off Tourist City, you can experience “Ersatzverkehr 2004”, a city tour gone astray. Lajos Talamonit’s Berlin theater group presents a grotesque, comical odyssey in a coach: while the tour guide is still describing the sights of Bremen, the coach is already on the wrong track….
