Film screening: Explosions Near the Museum
Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei
25.05.–26.05.24KH Künstler:innenhaus Bremen presents the film Explosions Near the Museum (2023) by Ukrainian artists and filmmakers Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei in the gallery on May 25 and 26.
The film shows footage of the empty display cases and rooms of the Museum of Regional History in Kherson, which was looted by the Russian occupying forces between October 24 and 26, 2022. Previously, the museum housed more than 173,000 objects spanning seven millennia, including the largest and oldest collection of antiquities in southern Ukraine and documents of shared Russian-Ukrainian history. The striking footage of the empty museum is accompanied by a text about the stolen exhibits and the sounds of grenades and rocket strikes recorded during the filming on December 12, 2022. The work draws attention to the role and vulnerability of cultural heritage in times of war.
The film runs 14 minutes and can be seen in a loop.
It will be shown with German subtitles for the first time.
