Bremen Studio Fellowship 2018

In her final presentation of the 2018 Bremen Studio Fellowship, Nora Olearius questions the calculation of value and rationalization of works of art and artistic work. Referring to commercial art libraries that rent artworks to furnish offices, amongst others, in Cubicle x Faktor Olearius presents an installation of borrowed works of art whose value is recalculated with the common formula height + width x factor, the factor contributing a subjective element. The packed canvases form a typical cubicle, an icon of architectural rationalization for open-plan office workplaces. The works of art remain anonymous and deny their perception as aesthetic objects. Only their dimensions and Olearius’ idiosyncratic value calculations – executed meticulously in handwriting on paper and documented in the exhibition space, reveal information about the borrowed works of art. In doing so, Olearius addresses the absurdity of mathematical quantification in the context of aesthetic perception.

Nora Olearius’ work addresses the calculation and meaning of numerical values and their construction in the context of artistic production and presentation.
