Guest Residency 2019: Peter Strickmann
Peter Strickmann (Berlin) is an artist who observes, questions and provokes the activity of listening in public and private environments. His installations, performances and actions are characterized by a simplicity of means and a philosophy of community. Listening - as a collective or highly individual activity - and sound production - as an unavoidable product of everyday life - form the cornerstones of his work.
Peter Strickmann has presented exhibitions, performances and projects at venues as diverse as zeitraumexit Mannheim, Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken, Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, FFT Forum Freies Theater Düsseldorf, Titanik Galleria Turku, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Berlinische Galerie Berlin, Künstlerhaus Dortmund and the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn. In addition to his exhibitions and solo performances, Strickmann is also active with various musical groups in the field of free improvisation and noise music, such as Spemakh, Pony and Reter, Riffels and Krapfnn.
Until 2013, Peter Strickmann studied Audiovisual Art (Prof. Christina Kubisch) and Public Art (Prof. Georg Winter) at the Saarbrücken Art Academy. Among other things, he runs an audio collection of sleep sounds, the so-called snoring archive, was a curatorial member of the Neuer Saarbrücker Kunstverein until 2015 and co-initiated the author publishing house for artists’ publications ismellpainter in 2012.
Peter Strickmann intends to use his guest scholarship at Künstler:innenhaus Bremen in a variety of ways: With extended recording excursions along the waters of Bremen as well as with the further development of an installation that will be shown in Saarbrücken this November. He will also be visited by the artist and dance performer Frédéric Ehlers, with whom he is working on a joint performance for the final presentation.
