Guest Residency 2024: Benedikt Lübcke

On September 1, artist Benedikt Lübcke began his five-week residency in the guest studio of Künstler:innenhaus Bremen. Lübcke was chosen by the members of Künstler:innenhaus Bremen as the 2024 guest artist - he was nominated by Henrik Nieratschker.

The residency at Künstler:innenhaus Bremen is Benedict Lübcke’s first artistic residency: “I am particularly looking forward to the freedom to try out what is currently on my mind for a month in the Künstler:innenhaus. I am currently preoccupied with the legend of Daniel in the lions’ den - in particular the depiction of the lions in Briton Rivière’s painting. The expression of the lions illustrates an ambivalence that reflects the uncertainty of the situation.” The residency at the Künstler:innenhaus will reveal the form that his exploration will take.

Benedikt Lübcke (* 1998, lives and works in Kiel) completed his Master of Fine Arts at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts Kiel in 2023 under Prof. Elisabeth Wagner, Prof. Alberta Niemann and Jenny Kropp. In 2019, he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation and spent a guest semester at the Kunsthogskolen i Oslo, Norway with Prof. Saskia Holmkvist. “Benedikt Lübcke’s works are spatial explorations, they feel their way into strange places, alienate them, create new spaces, distort contexts and dimensions. They spring from dark horror movie scenarios that are often uncannily close to the everyday curiosities and fears of our time,” says Lara Brörken, freelance author, literary scientist and art historian.
